Join us Saturday, June 15 for a fun, hands-on craftivity using sun, water, & plants! 

Central Ohio photographers Stephen Takacs and Mat Marrash lead participants through the historical image-capture process of cyanotype printing on the grounds of the current nursery. The process involves laying an assemblage of items on a chemically pre-treated surface & then exposing it to UV light. Rinsing with cold running water yields a unique image in hues of Prussian blue. Workshops run 1-3pm & 3-5pm; $55 Registration includes 1 pre-treated canvas bag.

Cyanotypes aka sunprints aka blueprints are an alternative photographic process which can be done outside in the daylight and prints can be made on a variety of materials. With proper pre-treatment of photographic materials, cyanotypes are a fun, hands-on, and safe process for children ages 5+.

Thanks to the GCAC, this event is FREE to all attendees, with enough supplies to make dozens of cyanotype prints on: watercolor paper, cotton napkins, tote bags, t-shirts, and some giant fabric murals. Those in attendance will have the opportunity to let their creative juices flow, practice a niche photographic craft, and learn about the history of photography. The Hilltop Cyanotype Day is an outdoor-based event that is estimated to last 5 hours, from Noon - 5PM at Westgate Park.

In addition to the community printing, photographer Mat Marrash and a crew of half a dozen Hilltop artists will be on-hand to demonstrate the process start to finish and Mat will be printing a limited number of Ultra Large Format mural prints from a series of Hilltop neighborhood urban landscapes.

Whether you're rocking a classic 35mm camera, experimenting with medium format, or even diving into the world of instant film, our group is open to everyone who wants to embark on this incredible analog adventure.

The world-renowned meetup Beers & Cameras is finally coming to Ohio! For it’s first ever meetup in the buckeye state, Beers & Cameras will be happening next Friday, March 31st starting at 6:00PM at the Great Lakes Brewing Company in Cleveland, OH. Bring your favorite camera, grab a brew, and come meet your fellow photography nerds!

Important! This class is limited to 3 attendees, so sign up early!!!

What will be covered: 

• Tools and chemistry necessary to develop a B&W silver gelatin print

• Discussing different types of printing paper

• Evaluating negatives and proofing

• Creating test strips and finding the right time and contrast for print

• Enlarging a final print on 8×10” RC paper

 Needed for class: 

• Developed roll of 35mm negatives

• Pen & paper for notes

• Clothes you would not mind getting dirty

By the end of the night, attendees will have successfully proofed their entire roll of 35mm film onto silver gelatin paper and created at least one 8×10” enlarged, finished print.

What time to arrive/leave for class?

The Midwest Photo Learning Studio is a very busy space booked for events and classes year-round! The studio will open 30 minutes prior to scheduled class time start and close 30 minutes after scheduled class time end.

An exhibition focusing on traditional darkroom prints and alternative process prints. Processes include, but not limited to; albumen, ambrotype, bromoil, carbon, cyanotype, daguerreotype, dry plate, gum bichromate, image transfer, kallitype, lumen, platinum/palladium, photogravure, polaroid / instax, salt, silver gelatin, van dyke brown, and wet plate.

Workshop attendees will be introduced to the world of film photography. The workshop will be divided into two distinct parts, theory and practice. For the first 90 minutes, students will learn about the history of photography that started with glass plates and has arrived at the cameras in our phones. From there, there will be an intermission with the opportunity to expose some B&W film with provided cameras and film. The remainder of the class will be focused on processing the film by hand and discussing the advantages and challenges of working with film.

Artist Holly Romano will explain and demonstrate how to artistically explore with cyanotype, a form of cameraless photography known for its iconic blue colors. Invented in 1877, this historical method was used to capture some of the first images ever created as a way to document plants. Today, it's still used by artists as a form of creative expression.

In this class, you will learn the basics of creating cyanotypes as well as have the opportunity to create your own! All materials are included in the cost. No previous creative experience is required. Ages 18 and up are welcome.
